UN hails Belarus’ progress towards SDGs

MINSK, 24 January (BelTA) - Belarus has achieved impressive results in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, and its efforts, experience, and commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals are highly valued at the international level, UN Deputy Secretary General Amina J. Mohammed said in her video address to the First National Forum on Sustainable Development in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

“The participation of the entire society is crucial for the 2030 active transformation. The interaction of the parliament with the executive authorities, civil society, academia and the private sector always has a positive effect on the achievement of the SDGs. A lot has already been done in Belarus. Your country has been showing great progress. The government has come a long way in building national policies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals,” Amina J. Mohammed said.

She highlighted a high level of coordination between all stakeholders in drafting a report on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in Belarus, which was presented at the global forum in 2017. She particularly emphasized the country’s ambitious programs in developing an inclusive society, providing equal opportunities for people with disabilities.

The ongoing exchange of the best practices between the UN and national authorities, for example, in terms of improving the care for sick and disabled people and preventing various forms of violence, is encouraging, Amina J. Mohammed said. She welcomed the work on the national sustainable development strategy for the period until 2035. “I am confident that we can provide comprehensive support to the country in shaping this strategy and implementing the country’s vision at the global level. Belarus will continue to play an important role in the subsequent processes, including at a high level,” Amina J. Mohammed said.
