Svetlov: Vitebsk is the heart of the world festival movement, pride of the country

VITEBSK, 9 July (BelTA) - Vitebsk has become the heart of the world festival movement, and is the pride of the country, Belarus’ Culture Minister Boris Svetlov told at a press conference dedicated to the opening of the festival, BelTA has learned.

"Vitebsk has become the heart of the world festival movement. Events of the Slavonic Bazaar in Vitebsk started earlier, on 7 and 8 July. These were the concert programs and also the meeting of festival organizers from various countries. Yesterday it became known that Director of the Slavonic Bazaar in Vitebsk Alexander Sidorenko became president of the World Association of Festivals," said Boris Svetlov.

He noted that this is very good news not only for Vitebsk but also for the entire country which has a range of iconic international festivals and contests. According to the Minister, the post of the head of the World Association of Festivals requires a lot of energy and effort, but he is sure that Alexander Sidorenko and his team will cope well with holding the festival this year.

Russia's Deputy Culture Minister Alexander Zhuravsky congratulated his Belarusian colleagues and the city of Vitebsk on this wonderful news. He stressed that in 2016, which is a jubilee year for the festival, Vitebsk will delight and surprise its guests and festival participants with remarkable events which will feature Russian artists as well.
