Samarasinha: Belarus to join UN Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities soon

MINSK, 25 September (BelTA) – Belarus will sign the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities soon, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Sanaka Samarasinha told journalists on 25 September, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus will sign the convention in a couple of days. This will be a huge leap forward, given that Belarus will be the last European country to join it,” Sanaka Samarasinha explained.

He believes that the delay in signing the convention is attributable to Belarus’ attitude towards the obligations is assumes. “Belarus takes its obligations very seriously,” Sanaka Samarasinha emphasized.

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was adopted on 13 December 2006 and came into force on 3 May 2008.
