Russian ambassador calls to develop Russian-Belarus integration

Russian ambassador calls to develop Russian-Belarus integration

MINSK, 18 March (BelTA) – There is no need to expect a deterioration of relations between Belarus and Russia. The countries need to develop integration, Russia’s Ambassador to Belarus Alexander Surikov told the media at the Russian embassy on 18 March, BelTA informs.

“The relations between Russia and Belarus have long been fraternal, based on the common historical and cultural roots. We cannot expect any serious changes in our relations, especially worsening. They can change towards deeper integration, and this is what we need. Deep economic integration is the key to the success of our countries' development in the years to come,” the ambassador said.

The diplomat took note of a big turnout at the polling stations set up in Belarus. He attributed it to the turbulent situation in the world, among other reasons. “Russian citizens, first of all, expect Russia to become stronger in the international arena, which is actually happening. They also expect the living conditions to improve in Russia and many other things,” he said.

Alexander Surikov stated that during the current presidential campaign in Russia presidential candidates were careful to not promise too much, whereas earlier, especially in the 1990s, certain candidates promised voters an exceptionally good and beautiful life. At the same time, this campaign was more significant, the ambassador said.

Almost 2,800 people voted early in Belarus. This time more polling stations were set up in the country. There were 13 polling stations across the country, including in Ostrovets where Russian citizens are involved in the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

The voting in the presidential elections in Russia was held in 13 Belarusian cities on 18 March.
