Opinion: Belarusians will survive sanctions but the country’s oppression will be part of history

MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) – Belarusians will survive the sanctions but the fact of the country’s oppression will always be part of historical records. Chairman of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus (FTUB) Mikhail Orda released a video address in connection with the introduction of more economic sanctions. The video address is available on the TUFB’s YouTube channel, BelTA has learned.

Mikhail Orda said: “Today it is understandable already that for those, who call for and enforce economic sanctions, we, Belarusians, are not people. We are only pawns for them. For the sake of their ambitions they are ready to sacrifice millions of fates of our country’s citizens. They are not worried that people may lose their jobs and their salaries. They are not worried that our parents may lose their pensions while mothers with kids may lose their benefits. They are indifferent to the possibility of someone being deprived of expensive medical treatment or good education. Today we see that they are largely unconcerned by the fact that everything Belarusians have been toiling to create for decades may perish. Moreover, they want it to happen. They say it openly: people may suffer but they have nothing to be afraid.”

The FTUB chairman remarked that Belarusians remember lessons of history. “We remember that such things already happened in our past. Eighty years ago we already heard beautiful slogans and promises of sweet life. Our country was virtually destroyed as a result. Today we say it was a military intervention. This time it is an economic intervention. Methods have changed but the goal remains the same: to subdue our country,” the official stressed. “I address all the politicians of the European Union and the USA. Look at history. Recall how many victims your predecessors have caused as a result of economic and political aggression. Today you undermine not only the Belarusian economy. You undermine the established world order. In essence you are toying with millions of human lives and human destinies.”

Mikhail Orda added: “Do you want ordinary Belarusians to suffer greatly in order to cause chaos, dissatisfaction, and ruin? But you have to understand that Belarusians will survive. But this fact of a cynical attitude to the people and your aggressive behavior, the country’s oppression will always remain part of historical records. It will remain on your conscience.”
