Opinion: Belarus on par with UK, Germany, United States in terms of cancer services

MINSK, 18 June (BelTA) – Cancer treatment in Belarus is of a high quality, on par with the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, Deputy Director of the Alexandrov National Cancer Center Sergei Krasny said in an interview with Belarus 1 TV channel on 18 June, BelTA has learned.

“Patients are treated in specialized cancer centers, national or regional ones. Our specialists apply a multidisciplinary approach. It is when chemotherapists, surgeons and radiologists together determine the tactics and choose the treatment that will be the most effective for a particular patient. Thanks to that we have good results, much better than in many countries, and Belarus is on par with such countries as the United Kingdom, Germany, United States,” Sergei Krasny said.

The Alexandrov National Cancer Center received the European accreditation in gynecologic oncology, and has been recognized as the reference center for contact-radiation therapy.

The Belarusian cancer treatment practices have been recommended as an example to follow for other countries by experts of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Belarusian health institutions employ approximately 300 oncologists. The death rate from cancer is gradually decreasing in the country.

In April the Belarusian capital hosted a major conference on urologic and gynecologic oncology. The forum in Minsk will become an annual event.
