MINSK, 9 August (BelTA) – We have come to Belarus to offer an objective observation, Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan Makhmud Istamov told in an interview to the STV TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“The current election campaign is different. This is, of course, related to the coronavirus pandemic. When we got an invitation from the CIS Executive Committee of Belarus, there was no doubt that we could not come as the Central Election Commissions of Uzbekistan and Belarus have long-time ties. We meet at different venues throughout the year, exchange experience. We have come to hold our objective observation, give our recommendations and wishes to our Belarusian counterparts,” Makhmud Istamov said.

In his words, the election campaign in Belarus is proceeding in a calm environment. “I believe that the Central Election Commission of Belarus has taken a number of right decisions to hold this election at a high organizational level, including amid the pandemic. We note that all the polling stations that we have visited meet the requirements of the Belarusian legislation. All necessary conditions for voters have been created. There are posters with information about the presidential candidates. All necessary conditions have been created for people with disabilities as well. All conditions have been created for us, too, so that we could conduct our observation openly. We can say that the election is held openly and transparently. People go to the polls to vote for the future of the country, for the future of their children,” the deputy chairman of the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan said.

Makhmud Istamov stressed that the turnout in Belarus is high as people demonstrate their active civic stance. “I know that early voting is very popular with people in Belarus. I believe this is right. The Central Election Commission should create all the conditions for the voter,” he added.
