No plans for simultaneous presidential, parliamentary elections in Belarus in 2020

No plans for simultaneous presidential, parliamentary elections in Belarus in 2020

MINSK, 15 November (BelTA) – The 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections in Belarus will not be held simultaneously, Chairperson of the Belarusian Central Election Commission Lidia Yermoshina told the media on 15 November, BelTA has learned.

“We will definitely not have them at the same time. The head of state has a clear position in this regard. He said long ago that the presidential election campaign should not coincide with any other one,” Lidia Yermoshina emphasized.

“Since the presidential and parliamentary terms expire at the same time, the elections should take place in 2020. Thus, a political decision will be taken to separate these campaigns. I do not know which one will start earlier and which one will be held in due course. These matters do not fall within the competence of the Central Election Commission,” she added.

According to the schedule of elections and referendums available on the website of the commission, the 2020 presidential elections should be held on 20 August at the latest, and the elections to the House of Representatives not later than 10 September, and the elections of members of the Council of the Republic on 11 September at the latest.
