Nikiforov: Belarusians, Russians should have prompt access to information

MINSK, 27 January (BelTA) – Citizens of Belarus and Russia should be able to have prompt access to information, Minister of Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation Nikolai Nikiforov said as he met with Belarus’ Information Minister Lilia Ananich on 27 January, BelTA has learned.

“It is important to make sure that the citizens of our countries have prompt access to information. This requires collaboration on the interstate level. It is also important to have an action plan envisaging the exchange of expert groups, joint internships, and joint projects. Russian mass media outlets are seriously considering their presence on Belarus’ information space. We should do our best to facilitate such contacts. More active information exchange will enable our nationals to get a more objective idea of things,” Nikolai Nikiforov believes.

Vigorous collaboration will allow creating a common information space of Belarus and Russia. It will also help expand economic and cultural contacts between the two states, Russia’s Minister of Communications and Mass Media said.

He noted that Belarus and Russia are pioneers in making legislative efforts to combat illegal manipulation of the information space. “The international community has not come up with the single rules of the game that would help streamline conventional, traditional working practices of mass media, protect copyright and settle many other issues arising amidst the dynamic development of communications. Legislators in Russia and Belarus are paying more and more attention to this field. We will work together and adopt the best practices of each other in order to improve these mechanisms,” Nikolai Nikiforov noted.

He expressed confidence that close contacts will allow boosting the bilateral cooperation in the information field. He upheld the suggestion of Lilia Ananich to hold meetings on the level of government agencies and expert groups representing all the member states of the Eurasian Economic Union. This is vitally important, as mass media help facilitate economic cooperation, Nikolai Nikiforov emphasized.
