MP explains why Belarus is a model of people’s power

MINSK, 9 December (BelTA) – Belarus can be considered a model of people’s power, where its key principles are observed, member of the House of Representatives Irina Dovgalo said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.

“By and large, and perhaps it may sound immodest, Belarus today is a model of people’s power. Therefore, the institution of the Belarusian People’s Congress reflects the country’s democratic nature, including for the collective West,” said Irina Dovgalo.

The parliamentarian noted, however, that Western politicians hold a unique understanding of the term. “The collective West, I dare say, exports its understanding of democracy throughout the world. We have seen how ‘democratically’ they have worked in a number of countries, leaving behind ruins,” she stated.

Irina Dovgalo explained that a fundamental characteristic of democracy is ensuring people’s power. Other essential components, she noted, include pluralism of political opinion, separation of powers, and the existence of local self government. According to the MP, all of these are present in Belarus.

Elaborating on pluralism, she pointed out that the Belarusian parliament has representatives from various political parties. “It’s true, there used to be more of them. But the legal provisions have changed. That said, absolutely everyone had the opportunity to re-register an existing party or create a new one. If we didn’t comply with the legal requirements, it’s their fault. But all the country’s parties are represented in parliament. This means everyone had equal opportunities,” Irina Dovgalo emphasized.
