MINSK, 16 January (BelTA) - In the current geopolitical circumstances, the role of Belarus in the CSTO is increasing, Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee on National Security of the House of Representatives Aleksandr Markevich told BelTA.

According to him, the priorities proclaimed by Belarus in the year of its chairmanship in the organization are extremely relevant.

"The CSTO countries have attached special attention to national security recently. The events in Ukraine and also the militarization of the states neighboring Belarus played their part. In difficult geopolitical circumstances, the military-political bloc must show its strongest suits. The role of Belarus in the organization is big and is increasing. In the year of its chairmanship, Belarus will prioritize the cohesion of the member states of the organization and the strengthening of its positions in the system of international relations. This is what is extremely important now," he said.

Belarus also intends to concentrate its efforts on improving the regulatory framework. "We need to improve the quality of analytical work in the CSTO. Forecasts and findings about the emerging military-political situation, forecasts of its development should be more qualitative. As for the legislative function, work is underway to develop model laws," Aleksandr Markevich said.

Another line of focus is to increase the prestige of the CSTO, to step up its interaction with other international organizations and with third countries. "This will ensure stability and prevent risks and challenges," the expert is sure.

"At a time when the West is trying, with all its might, to destabilize the situation in the member states, the CSTO acts as a guarantor of security and stability. We need to finalize the regulatory framework so that the procedures for the arrival of peacekeeping forces, their registration, customs and border procedures are clear and simplified. It is also necessary to clearly prescribe the rights and obligations of all those who participate in peacekeeping operations," the MP emphasized.
