Makei calls for peace in Ukraine

BERLIN, 18 November (BelTA-TASS) – Belarus would like to see peace restored in Ukraine as soon as possible, Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said after talks with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin on 18 November, BelTA has learned.

“Our position is clear: we want peace restored in Ukraine as soon as possible,” Vladimir Makei said. “We try to make every effort to stabilize the situation,” he added. In his words, the conflict in Ukraine “is a threat to the security of the whole region.”

For his part, Frank-Walter Steinmeier said: “We have discussed the prospects for rapprochement between Belarus and the European Union. Normalization of relations is in our common interests.” “We should try to rebuild trust,” the German Minister added. There is “movement” in Belarus which allows doing so, he noted. Frank-Walter Steinmeier pointed out that “the quality of dialogue with Belarus has significantly changed.”
