Lukashenko warns against out-of-control price rises

MINSK, 1 April (BelTA) – It is necessary to keep prices for consumer goods under control and prevent their unjustified growth, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he heard out a report of First Deputy Prime Minister Nikolai Snopkov and Minister of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade Vladimir Koltovich, BelTA has learned.

“As you say, first of all, this pertains to the products that are most in demand by our not very rich compatriots. However, the most important thing is to prevent unreasonable price increases. How do you understand the notion of ‘unreasonable growth’ and how are you dealing with it? God forbid, prices will rise unchecked in the second, third and subsequent quarters,” the head of state said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized that pricing and inflation are among the most burning questions: “How do you assess the situation with prices? I would like to recall that at the beginning of the year we took tough action on medicines and staple products. Though I do not quite understand this division into essential and non-essential products. It is necessary to monitor prices for all products and take action. The methods for such decision-making should be appropriate.”
