Lukashenko suggests creating national heroes' pantheon

MINSK, 17 September (BelTA) – We need a national heroes' pantheon, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at a meeting with members of the expert community engaged in ideological work to mark Day of People’s Unity in  Minsk on 17 September, BelTA has learned.
 
One of the topics addressed by the head of state during the meeting was the creation of a national heroes' pantheon. According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, this topic is highly sensitive.
 
"We must also understand who is a hero, who is an enemy, who contributed to global culture, science, and history while maintaining their connection to the Motherland, and who did the same but renounced their identity. We are not erasing anyone from our history. But the distinctions must be made clearly and, preferably, without half-measures," he emphasized.
 
At the same time, the president stated, the official position must be just as clearly reasoned and reflected in information sources. "There is only one criterion: loyalty to the interests of the native land and people," he added.

In this context, the head of state inquired whether such distinctions are being emphasized in school and university curricula. He noted that every historical figure serves as an educator of children.

“Everything is clear with the heroes of the Great Patriotic War: they died heroically for the Motherland. But we also had long periods of peaceful history. We need examples of people who lived and worked heroically,” Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized.
