Lukashenko: Inflation in Belarus below 5% despite strongest external pressure

MINSK, 28 February (BelTA) – Belarus is keeping the inflation below 5%  despite the strongest external pressure, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he addressed the 8th Congress of the Federation of Trade Union of Belarus (FTUB) in Minsk on 28 February, BelTA has learned.

The head of state noted that the issues that fall under the competence of trade unions include the growth and timely payment of salaries, ensuring full and productive employment, supporting the most vulnerable categories of workers, improving working conditions, monitoring workplace discipline, increasing productivity and improving quality of manufactured products.

“But there are the results that we can talk about today. This is the macroeconomic stability and lower inflation. The task of keeping the inflation below 5% is being fulfilled despite the strongest external pressure. You can see how relations with our main partners are shaping up," Alexander Lukashenko said.

“At the same time, there are the areas where we have underperformed, to put it mildly,” the president said. According to the president, these include the efficiency of the agricultural industry, certain projects to modernize industry, the development of education and science.

“These are the areas that we will have to analyze in detail together with the economic agencies of the country,” the Belarusian leader added. "We need to preserve manufactures and labor collectives by all means. We have always done it, even in the most difficult times. People were not thrown out onto the street. The salary, albeit not the highest, was paid,” the president noted.
