MINSK, 17 September (BelTA) - I have always done my best to ensure good relations with Poland, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at a meeting with members of the expert community engaged in ideological work to mark Day of People’s Unity in Minsk on 17 September, BelTA has learned.

When asked about a potential thaw in relations with neighboring Poland and the Baltic states, the president said: “I have always done my best to ensure that we have good relations. I have always strived for this. I am not to blame. I am always ready for this.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko specifically mentioned Poland’s reaction to the Belarusian-Russian strategic army exercise Zapad 2025, saying that their concerns were noted and the exercise was moved inland, away from the border. “It was my personal decision to move it away from the border. Not to provoke them,” he emphasized.

Nevertheless, the president stated, the Polish side found a reason to close the border. “They have long been looking for things to provoke us. But to no avail. We waive the visa requirements; they build a wall on the border. And now they also close it,” the Belarusian leader pointed out. “They need something. My main task is to prevent [escalation]. There should be no reasons for it.”
