Li Zhanshu: Belarus should deal with its domestic affairs on its own

MINSK, 8 June (BelTA) – Belarusian people should deal with their domestic affairs on their own, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China Li Zhanshu said at a video conference with Chairman of the House of Representatives Vladimir Andreichenko and Chair of the Council of the Republic Natalya Kochanova, BelTA has learned.

“We believe that over the years of independence, under the leadership of Aleksandr Lukashenko, Belarus has achieved meaningful, outstanding results in all areas of state building. China sticks to the view that the domestic affairs of Belarus should be dealt with by Belarusian people themselves. We are convinced that our Belarusian partners will be able to maintain political stability and social tranquility,” Li Zhanshu said.

According to him, it is important to intensify political contacts between China and Belarus, to support each other when it comes to protecting the key interests of the two countries. He also urged to step up efforts to promote the Belt and Road Initiative.

“Belarus is our important partner in this area of cooperation. We have achieved appreciable results. The China-Belarus Industrial Park Great Stone is gaining ground. It has become a landmark project of the initiative. Last year, the bilateral trade grew by more than 10%. In January-April this year, it increased by another 58%. We should promote high-quality cooperation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative,” he said.

Li Zhanshu is sure that Belarus and China need to boost interregional cooperation. “Today, 33 towns, cities and regions of Belarus and China each have twinning links. All six regions of Belarus have established friendly relations with similar provinces and cities in China, which is a rare thing in interstate relations,” he added.
