Gusakov: Belarus has big scientific, technical and human capacity in space industry

MINSK, 25 October (BelTA) - Belarus has great scientific, technical and human capacity in space industry, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) Vladimir Gusakov said at the 8th Belarusian Space Congress on 25 October, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus is one of the countries with an effective system of scientific institutions and relevant infrastructure for research in many important scientific fields. The country’s scientific potential allows it to focus on the innovation way of development of science-intensive industries. The space sector in the areas of information, communication and aerospace technologies, Earth remote sensing, space instrumentation and electronics industry is defined as one of the priority areas of innovation development for Belarus,” said Vladimir Gusakov.

The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus is vested with the implementation of a unified state policy, regulation of activities in the research and use of outer space for peaceful purposes. The Space Research Agency was set up in the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus in 2015 to implement various tasks in the space sector. “Our country has sufficient scientific, technical and human capacity, as well as rich experience of developments in the space sector. At present we can say with confidence about the development of a space industry in Belarus, which involves more than 20 scientific and production organizations and employs about 4,000 highly-qualified specialists. There is also necessary infrastructure aimed at strategic research,” the chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences said.

According to him, the promising areas include the implementation of the national space program for 2021-2025, the development of the Earth remote sensing, the application of the results of space activities in various areas, including precision farming, digitalization, and the study of Antarctica. The topical ones also comprise the development of the national system of satellite communication and broadcasting, navigation, geodetic and mapping activities based on space technology, the system of aerospace education, development of new materials used in the creation of spacecraft for exploration of near and far space, participation in international projects to study the Moon, Mars and other space objects.

“The Belarusian Space Congress has already become a traditional platform to discuss new achievements in the space sector and priority development areas, issues of international cooperation in space research, including the results of scientific and technical programs of the Union State, as well as partnerships of enterprises and organizations of space industry,” Vladimir Gusakov said.

The congress is taking place at the National Academy of Sciences on 25-26 October at premises of the Informatics Institute and the A.V. Lykov Heat and Mass Transfer Institute. Participants of the congress are expected to hear out over 120 speeches by scientists and specialists from Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, China, and Uzbekistan.

The NASB is also hosting an exhibition of scientific and technical space products based on the results of scientific and technical programs and projects in space industry, and also an exposition of technical and popular science literature on space issues.
