Cuba viewed as Belarus’ reliable ally

MINSK, 15 April (BelTA) - Cuba holds a special place in the foreign policy of the Republic of Belarus, being its reliable ally, Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yevgeny Shestakov said at a special event in the House of Friendship on 14 April to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Cuba, BelTA has learned.

“Cuba, which is close to us in spirit, occupies a special place not only in the foreign policy of the Republic of Belarus, being its reliable ally. This country is also in the hearts of the Belarusian people as a symbol of freedom, friendship and brotherly relations,” he said. “In December 1991 the Republic of Cuba was one of the first to recognize the independence of the young Belarusian state, and a few months later, on 16 April 1992, the official representatives of the two countries signed a historic protocol to establish diplomatic relations between the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Cuba.”

Although the development of strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two nations covers a much broader historical period.

“Over the past three decades, our countries have managed to significantly strengthen the high level of mutual trust and respect, to bring our national interests closer on a wide range of issues,” Yevgeny Shestakov said.

In his words, today Belarus and Cuba are united by a multi-pronged strategic partnership, based on the immutable principles of respect for sovereignty, national identity, equality and consideration of each other's interests.

Our countries conduct an intense political dialogue, build a solid system of mutually beneficial economic ties, substantially increasing trade and economic cooperation.
