Clark: Chernobyl-affected regions in Belarus on the way towards social and economic recoveryMINSK, 25 April (BelTA) – The Belarusian regions affected by the Chernobyl disaster are on the way towards the social and economic recovery, Administrator of the UN Development Program Helen Clark said after the official ceremony to unveil the commemorative plaque for Ruth Waller on secondary school No. 130 in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

Two years ago I visited Belarus and travelled to the regions affected by the Chernobyl accident. I saw that the settlements were on the ways towards the social and economic recovery, UNDP Administrator Helen Clark said.

Clark: Chernobyl-affected regions in Belarus on the way towards social and economic recoveryShe added that for the past 10 years, the UNDP has been the coordinator of technical assistance to Belarus. “This work would not have been possible without close cooperation with the government of Belarus,” Helen Clark said.

Helen Clark thanked Belarus for numerous events which the country holds to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.
