Call for Gomel Oblast, Ukraine’s Zhitomir Oblast to step up cooperation

Call for Gomel Oblast, Ukraine’s Zhitomir Oblast to step up cooperation

GOMEL, 3 October (BelTA) – Gomel Oblast and Ukraine’s Zhitomir Oblast should develop cooperation in mechanical engineering, construction, agribusiness, and tourism, Gomel Oblast Governor Gennady Solovei said at the 2nd Forum of Regions of Belarus and Ukraine in Zhitomir on 3 October, BelTA learned from the press secretary of Grodno Oblast administration Olga Ryabikova.

This year’s forum of regions will give an impetus to the launch of new promising, mutually beneficial joint projects of the regions of Belarus and Ukraine, Gennady Solovei believes. Speaking about cooperation between Gomel Oblast and Ukraine’s regions in general, he noted that Chernigov Oblast traditionally tops the list of Ukrainian partners in terms of trade as it accounts for over 30% of Gomel Oblast export. Kiev and Kiev Oblast follow with 27% and Dnepropetrovsk Oblast with 10% rounds out the top three. The share of Zhitomir Oblast in Gomel Oblast export is just 2.5% for now. “We have a lot of areas of common interest and the vital need to develop mechanical engineering, construction, agribusiness, and tourism,” Gennady Solovei said. By the way, Gomel Oblast and Zhitomir Oblast intend to renew the agreement on cooperation in trade, economy, investment, science and technology, culture, and the humanitarian sphere at the 2nd Forum of Regions of Belarus and Ukraine.

Gennady Solovei also stressed the importance of creating a new transport corridor down the Dnieper River and setting up a port in Nizhniye Zhary in Belarus’ Bragin District. “However, while creating a new waterway still presents certain difficulties, participating in construction of land roads appeals to Gomel Oblast enterprises because they have considerable experience in this area,” he said. Gennady Solovei called the project to build a part of the motorway Kiev-Chernigov-Novyye Yarilovichi as an example of successful cooperation in this field. Belarusian enterprises have recently got another order to build a road in Ukraine’s Rovno Oblast. “We would like to continue enhancing cooperation in this area. Moreover, asphalt produced in Gomel Oblast also enjoys demand in Ukraine,” he added.

Gennady Solovei believes that both parties are interested in easing the border crossing procedure for tourist buses at the border checkpoints of Gomel Oblast and Chernigov Oblast.
