Belarusian peace-loving policy credited with removal of sanctions

MINSK, 30 December (BelTA) – Belarus’ peace-loving policy prompted the removal of sanctions against the country. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the statement on 30 December, BelTA has learned.

Speaking about Ukrainian affairs, the head of state said he believes “we should not exaggerate our role in resolving the conflict”. “Our stance can be welcomed because Belarus has always spoken in favor of peace,” noted the President. “We don’t welcome wars or any conflicts whether that be conflicts in Ukraine, Syria, Lebanon, Iran. We don’t accept such things. It is our stance.”

“The things that happened in Minsk… You know I’d say they had to happen in Minsk because there is no other country, which can be a more ardent proponent of peace. The victory that happened 70 years ago is the foundation of it,” the head of state was convinced.

Speaking about Minsk agreements and peace meetings in Belarus on Ukrainian affairs, the President stressed: “This is why the event that happened was very important — primarily for Ukraine, for Russia, for our continent, for this region. But it gave a prompt, gave the reason, not even a reason but a prompt — as a gift for the West — to lift all kinds of sanctions from us. They needed some powerful prompt of the kind and they used the opportunity once they had it.”

“Frankly speaking, they — the present European politicians, the United States — should be thanked for it. For their grabbing the chance, this occasion for us and for them to go away from this confrontation with Belarus,” said the head of state.
