Belarusian medics capable of performing any organ transplant surgery

MINSK, 9 April (BelTA) - Belarusian medics are capable of performing any organ transplantation surgery, Oleg Rummo, Head of the National Applied Research Center for Organ and Tissue Transplantation said in an interview to the ONT TV channel on 8 April, BelTA informs.

“We are capable of performing any surgery,” said Oleg Rummo.

The statistics show that kidney transplantation is a most frequently needed surgery. Some 140,000 organ transplantation surgeries are performed every year worldwide. Some 100,000-110,000 of them are kidney transplantations.

There has not been a successful human head transplant in the world yet.

2,400 Belarusians refused organ donation after death. “Over the past 3-4 years the figure has not changed much. It makes up 45-50 people a year. It is great that we see a reverse process when people start changing their minds on the matter,” said Oleg Rummo.
