Belarus wins 680 medals at big international tournaments in 2018

MINSK, 27 February (BelTA) – Belarusian athletes won a total of 680 (227 gold, 216 silver and 237 bronze) medals at the Olympic Games, world and European championships, and World Cups in 2018. Of them 253 medals were claimed in Olympic sports, Belarus’ Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk said at the ministerial meeting in Minsk on 27 February, BelTA has learned.

Belarus won three (two gold and one silver) medals at the 23rd Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in 2018. Gold medals were clinched by aerials skier Hanna Huskova and the biathlon team of Darya Domracheva, Nadezhda Skardino, Dzinara Alimbekava and Iryna Kryuko in the Women 4x6km Relay. Darya Domracheva also won silver in the Women Mass Start.

According to Sergei Kovalchuk, the 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang became the most successful for Belarusian athletes who won 12 (four gold, four silver and four bronze) medals.

As for the summer sports, Belarus won five (one gold and four bronze) medals in the Olympic disciplines. Apart from that, Belarusian athletes made it to the top eight in the Olympic sports at the world championships 14 times. At the European championships Belarusian athletes won 20 (two gold, eight silver and ten bronze) medals. A total of 51 new Belarus’ records were set last year.
