Belarus win 647 medals at major sports tournaments in 2017

MINSK, 31 January (BelTA) – Belarusian athletes picked up 647 medals at championships, world and European cups and championships (177 gold, 216 silver, and 254 bronze medals), Belarus’ Sports and Tourism Minister Alexander Shamko noted at a meeting at the ministry on 31 January, BelTA informs.

Belarusians won 249 medals in Olympic sports last year, the minister pointed out. This number includes three gold, two silver, and three bronze medals at world championships and 19 trophies (5, 5, 9) at European championships. In general, Belarusian athletes took home way more medals in 2017 than a year prior.

As for the regions, major contributors to the victories at international sports events were the sports organizations of Minsk, Vitebsk Oblast, and Minsk Oblast, Alexander Shamko remarked.

Young Belarusian athletes also produced good results, the minister said. In 2017, they claimed 415 medals (116 gold, 146 silver, 153 bronze ones) at youth and junior world and European championships, 176 out of them in Olympic sports. The most trophies were won by the sports organizations of Minsk, Gomel Oblast, and Vitebsk Oblast.

The meeting at the Belarusian Sports and Tourism Ministry brought together over 600 sports workers from across the country.
