Belarus president: Time to launch Helsinki 2 process to calm down the world

MINSK, 14 December (BelTA) – It is necessary to launch the large-scale negotiation process Helsinki 2 soon. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the statement as he met with representatives of the Russian mass media community on 14 December, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Lukashenko said: “I believe it is necessary to convene such a conference soon. It should be done in order to somehow calm down the world. I believe the world will be saved if we stop, if we at least don’t rush into an arms race and tomorrow’s war. We are about to start shooting at each other. We need Helsinki 2.”

At the same time Alexander Lukashenko remarked that countries have been unable to arrange a proper OSCE summit in order to discuss topical problems of international security let alone launch a new negotiation process. The last meeting of the heads of state took place in Astana in 2010, the previous one in Istanbul in 1999. “It is a massive shame,” added the Belarus president.
