Belarus named an example of the balance of sovereign interests and integration commitments in EEU

MINSK, 19 February (BelTA) – Belarus is an example of the balance of the sovereign interests and integration obligations in the Eurasian Economic Union, Belarus’ First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Mikhnevich said at a meeting of the Belarusian Scientific and Advisory Council for Social and Economic Development under the Presidium of the Council of the Republic held on 19 February to discuss the unification of the legislation of the EEU member states, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Mikhnevich expressed concerns regarding the withdrawals and restrictions which still remain in place in the trade between the EEU states and which hinder the development of the common market. In his words, it will possibly take a couple of years to neutralize the effect of the withdrawals which emerged including due to the WTO obligations of some EEU member states. “We need to take a well-thought approach and take into account a preferred balance between one’s sovereign interests and integration obligations. I think Belarus is a good example here,” said Alexander Mikhnevich.

The Scientific and Advisory Council met on 19 February to discuss the operation of the EEU, analyze the issues related to the implementation of reached agreements. One of its main goals is to work out recommendations to improve the activity of the EEU, including enhancement of its legal framework.
