Belarus-Azerbaijan relations rely on solid foundation of historical, cultural ties

MINSK, 23 April (BelTA) – Relations between Belarus and Azerbaijan rely on a strong foundation of historical and cultural ties. The statement was made by Head of the International Cooperation and Information Support Department of the Belarusian Culture Ministry Viktoria Ratobylskaya during a music and poetry party dedicated to the memory of the Azerbaijani poet and thinker Imadaddin Nasimi, BelTA has learned. The event took place in the House of Friendship in Minsk. It was timed to the 650th anniversary since the poet’s birthday. The evening party was organized by the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Belarus.

Viktoria Ratobylskaya noted that cultural cooperation between Belarus and Azerbaijan intensively advances across the board. The large number of events held by both countries testifies to that. The music and poetry party will surely help bring the two nations closer to each other, she noted. “Peoples of Belarus and Azerbaijan have unique historical experience and rich traditions. A closer look at the national legacy of the countries can mutually enrich our cultures,” the official stressed.

Imadaddin Nasimi’s art remains important for the spiritual and moral betterment of people today. “It occupies a place in the treasury of the nations of the East. For many years it has been in the center of attention of scientific, literary, and philosophic thought,” the Culture Ministry representative said. “For many centuries his name has been hailed as a symbol of courage, unshakeable will, and dedication to ideals.” Imadaddin Nasimi was a proponent of spiritual freedom, love, and peace.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Azerbaijan to Belarus Latif Gandilov emphasized the topicality of Imadaddin Nasimi’s many ideas for the modern society. “The world we live in now gives a lot of reasons for worrying. Return to the ideas of Sufism and Hurufism that Imadaddin Nasimi shared is very important for us,” he said. As an example the ambassador mentioned the poet’s belief that man should set a limit for his desires instead of becoming a slave to them. The spiritual formula was expressed back in the 14th century. According to the diplomat, the modern generation should abide by this formula. “Abandon your desires and you will find truth. By rejecting the external, you will find truth inside yourself,” the ambassador quoted the poet as saying.
