Ambassador: Belarus and Latvia need to maintain momentum of comprehensive partnership

MINSK, 16 November (BelTA) – It is important for Belarus and Latvia to maintain the momentum of full-fledged collaboration, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Belarus Martins Virsis said at a meeting held in Minsk House of Friendship on 16 November to mark Latvia’s Independence Day, BelTA has learned.

According to the diplomat, both the states have been developing cooperation in political, economic and cultural fields. “It is of high importance to maintain the momentum,” he expressed confidence.

“We are happy that we have good all-round relations. This year the Latvian embassy has worked hard to establish an exchange of delegations, enhance the Belarusian-Latvian interaction,” said Martins Virsis. He emphasized the mutual interest in maintaining contacts which have been developing between agencies, companies, museums and schools.

In turn, Nina Ivanova, chairwoman of the Belarusian Society of Friendship and Cultural Links with Foreign Countries said that in April 2017 Belarus and Latvia are set to celebrate the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the event which will mark a significant milestone in the friendship between the two states.

Head of the Europe Department at the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yevgeny Vorobyov said that Belarus and Latvia share a longstanding friendship. “The most important thing is that there is a big interest in mutually beneficial cooperation from both the sides,” he said, adding that in Latvia there are about 2,000 companies with the Belarusian capital and nearly 800,000 Latvia-funded firms in Belarus.
