Two teams to represent Belarus at Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in Washington

MINSK, 28 January (BelTA) - A team of the Faculty of International Relations of the Belarusian State University (BSU) and the Belarusian State Economic University will represent Belarus at the final round of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in Washington, United States, BelTA has learned from the organizers.

The team of the Faculty of International Relations of the Belarusian State University was named winner of the national qualifying round that ended in Minsk on 27 January. The team included third-year students Anna Zykova, Yekaterina Logvinovich, Alisia Ivanova and Alyona Prikhodko. The students are coached by Tatyana Zinyakova and Yekaterina Shkarbuta.

The team of the Belarusian State Economic University placed second.

The team of the Law Faculty of the Belarusian State University was honored with special awards of the UK Embassy in Belarus. A team of the Law College of the Belarusian State University was named The Best Debut of the Year. The best speakers title went to Yekaterina Logvinovich, Alyona Prikhodko and fourth-year student of the Law Faculty Alena Potorskaya. Associate Professor of International Law Faculty at the BSU Yelena Konnova was honored for the contribution to the development of of the Philip C. Jessup competition in Belarus.

The national qualifying round featured 12 teams from the Belarusian State University, Belarusian State Economic University, Vitebsk and Gomel branches of the International University MITSO, BIP - Institute of Law, Pushkin Brest State University, Baranovichi State University, Kuleshov Mogilev State University, Polotsk State University, Kupala Grodno State University and Belarusian State Agricultural Academy.

The competition was a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Each team argued both the Applicant and Respondent sides in the cases on state responsibility for corporate environmental degradation, the appropriation of indigenous knowledge and resources for commercial purposes, and protection of endangered animal species. This year the winners were announced by Executive Director of the International Law Students Association (ILSA) Lesley Benn who took part in the national round in Belarus for the first time.

The final round of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition will be held Washington, United States in late April.
