Tentative plans to study international humanitarian law in Belarusian schools

MINSK, 8 November (BelTA) – International humanitarian law may be taught in Belarusian schools. The statement was made by Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei after negotiations with President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer on 8 November, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei said: “We have summed up some results and have sketched out plans for the future with regard to studying international humanitarian law not only in universities but also in secondary schools.”

Vladimir Makei described the regional seminar of the International Committee of the Red Cross on the implementation of international humanitarian law in Minsk on 8 November as a good example of cooperation in this sphere. “The organization of such seminars has already become a good tradition for us. It is very important and necessary,” believes the Belarusian minister of foreign affairs.

Vladimir Makei added that during the visit Peter Maurer would also read a lecture on humanitarian challenges of the modern world in the Belarusian State University. “Taking into account his vast experience it will be very important, useful, and necessary for our students and professors,” noted the diplomat.
