Team of Belarusian biologists nominated for CIS humanitarian award

MOSCOW, 11 April (BelTA) – A team of scientists from the Central Botanical Garden of Belarus has been nominated for the Stars of the Commonwealth award, the press service of the Interstate Foundation for Humanitarian Cooperation of the CIS member states told BelTA.

The team includes Vladimir Reshetnikov, Doctor of Biology, professor, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, an honored worker of science of Belarus, head of the biochemistry and plant biotechnologies department; Vladimir Titok, Doctor of Biology, associate professor, corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, an honored worker of science of Belarus, head of the lab for biodiversity of plant resources; and Yelena Spiridovich, Candidate of Biology, associated professor, head of the applied biochemistry lab. They were nominated for the project to plant a series of specifically bred lilacs in hero cities in honor of Great Patriotic War heroes and sites of great battles. The project will be implemented in 2011-2018. The best lilac varieties created using cellular biotechnologies will be employed.

This year 12 nominees from eight countries compete for the Stars of the Commonwealth award. The nominees are painters, musicians, artists, pedagogues, mathematicians, physicists, biologists, plant breeders, and pharmacists. Out of the 12 nominees the panel of judges that will include representatives of all the CIS member states will select eight laureates. The decision will be made on 1 May at the latest.

The Stars of the Commonwealth award has been instituted by the Council for Humanitarian Cooperation and the Interstate Foundation for Humanitarian Cooperation of the CIS member states. The award is bestowed every year for outstanding accomplishments on par with world ones in the sphere of humanitarian activities. These accomplishments are supposed to contribute to the development of every CIS member state and the Commonwealth as a whole.
