Spectacular fireworks to mark Minsk’s 948th anniversary

MINSK, 26 August (BelTA) - A 12-minute fireworks display on Saturday night, 12 September, will make part of a two-day celebration of the 948th anniversary of the Belarusian capital Minsk, representative of the main department for ideology, culture and youth affairs under the Minsk City Hall Sergei Medvedev told reporters on 26 August, BelTA informs.

“The festivities will be wrapped up with a colorful burst of pyrotechnics above the Minsk City Hero Memorial at 10pm local time,” said Sergei Medvedev.

Minsk will host more than 60 festive activities to mark its City Day. The program will include an award ceremony for the winners of the Best Professional Skills contest on 11 September. On the same day Minskers that take an active part in the maintenance of order and prevention of wrongdoing will be honored at the Minsk Town Hall.

The main celebrations will take place on 12 September. Minsk will mark its 948th anniversary since the city was first mentioned in 1067. The motto of this year’s festivities is My Native Minsk, You are the Heart of Belarus.

By tradition the city authorities and Minsk residents will lay flowers to the Minsk City Hero Memorial on 12 September. The Upper Town concert hall will play host to a wedding ceremony for nine couples from all districts of the capital. Between 12pm and 8pm on 12 September there will be free entertainment with the participation of Belarusian art figures and an arts and crafts exhibition fair. Minsk residents and guests will have an opportunity to feel the air of the past epochs at the international reenactment festival Ancient Minsk.

The award ceremony for the Minskers of the Year will be hosted at the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater at 8pm.

Festivities will be held in all administrative districts of the city.
