Saint Euphrosyne’s pendent seal found in Polotsk

VITEBSK, 1 June (BelTA) – An ancient pendent seal of Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk was found during the excavations at the Saint Euphrosyne Monastery, BelTA learned from the Polotsk District Executive Committee.

The diggings at the Saint Euphrosyne Monastery in Polotsk jointly conducted by Belarusian and Russian archaeologists were finished ahead of the celebrations of the Polotsk City Day and the Saint Euphrosyne Day on 5 June.

“This archaeological find attests to the great role of Saint Euphrosyne and her unique personality. It also testifies to the fact that the monastery was not only a large religious and cultural center, but also an influential socio-political center that maintained an active correspondence and where Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk stamped the documents with her seal,” representatives of the Polotsk District Executive Committee said.

The artifact will become part of the exhibition of fresco paintings from the walls of the Transfiguration Church that is currently on display at the Polotsk Art Gallery.

The presentation of the archaeological find will be held at the Polotsk Art Gallery on 4 June. The pendent seal will be on show for four days, from 4 till 7 June.
