Partisans Chronicles: Stalin Partisan Unit No. 208

Partisans Chronicles: Stalin Partisan Unit No. 208

MINSK, 26 June (BelTA) - In the midst of the battles for Belarus the Communist Party and the government of the republic instructed the partisans to reinforce strikes against the retreating Nazis. During that period of the war, planning, coordination and support of partisan operations were provided by operational groups of the Belarusian command of partisan movement. They were set up at the military councils of the fronts and acted in close contact with the command of the regular troops.

As a result of joint combat operations partisans and the Red Army troops destroyed enemy garrisons, conquered heights and river crossings, liberated population settlements...

The new page in the joint project of BelTA and the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War History is dedicated to Partisans Chronicles: Stalin Partisan Unit No. 208. In 1943 Stalin Partisan Unit No. 208 was converted into Partisan Regiment No. 208 consisting of three battalions joined the Red Army and on 11 July 1944.

The project is based on a unique collection of handwritten partisan journals provided by the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War History. The collection was assigned the status of historical and cultural value of international importance (Class 1).

Every week BelTA brings these chronicles to light and posts their digital copies. Each of them sheds light on various aspects of partisans’ life, gives a glimpse into thoughts and feelings of people who risked their lives to fight a battle behind enemy lines.
