Partisan Chronicles: Women in War

Partisan Chronicles: Women in War

MINSK, 6 March (BelTA) – They built barricades near Leningrad and Sevastopol, dug out anti-tank ditches near Moscow, extinguished fires, worked at factories under bombardment, carried wounded soldiers from the battlefield amidst the shower of bullets…

70,000 women in Belarus joined the fight against the enemy, about 19% of all partisans. Nine of them were honored with the Hero of the Soviet Union title, four of them posthumously.

“Partisan Chronicles: Women in War” is a new page of the joint project of BelTA and the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War History. It is dedicated to female members of the underground and partisan movement.

The project is based on a unique collection of handwritten partisan journals provided by the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War History. The collection was assigned the status of historical and cultural value of international importance (Class 1).

Every week BelTA brings these chronicles to light and posts their digital copies. Each of them sheds light on various aspects of partisans’ life, gives a glimpse into thoughts and feelings of people who risked their lives to fight a battle behind enemy lines.
