Only Belarusian rubles to pay for fuel on Belarusian roads

MINSK, 2 March (BelTA) – Foreign citizens will be able to refuel their vehicles on Belarusian roads only if they pay with Belarusian rubles. The requirement is stipulated by the relevant executive order issued by the Council of Ministers and the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus, the press service of the Belarus government told BelTA.

Executive order No. 148/8 of 27 February 2015 invalidated the previous executive order that allowed spending U.S. dollars, euros, and Russian rubles to pay for refueling foreign-registration vehicles at refueling stations located along public motorways with M and M/E in their names and at refueling stations located close to the Belarusian border. The new executive order came into force on 2 March.

BelTA reported earlier that on 1 March the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus stopped issuing permits that allowed economic operators to take foreign currency from natural persons in exchange for merchandise in retail trade, for vehicle fuel, insurance and tourism operations, for rendering services along the national motorways with M and M/E in their names and at Belarusian border checkpoints. The previously issued permits are no longer valid.

Natural persons can still spend foreign currency in duty-free shops. The measures to reduce the use of duty-free shopsare supposed to raise the trust of the nation and economic operators in the national currency in addition to protecting the home consumer market.
