MINSK, 20 February (BelTA) – The National Belarusian Language Dictation will be held on 21 February on International Mother Language Day, BelTA learned from Igor Kopylov, Director of the Yakub Kolas Institute of Linguistics of the Center for Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

“The National Belarusian Language Dictation has already become a good tradition. It will be held at the Yakub Kolas Central Scientific Library of the National Academy of Sciences on 21 February from 13:00 to 14:00. The main goal of the dictation is to show that the Belarusian language is ancient and original. The dictation will be dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War,” the director of the institute said.

The scientist explained how the event will be held: “Everyone will be able to check their proficiency in the Belarusian language. A text will be read out. At the end, there will be time to check it for mistakes.”

Igor Kopylov noted that the dictation will be held in offline and online formats. “The library's capacity is limited, so only a small number of people will be able to write a dictation offline there. Yet, anyone can do it   online. Last year more than 2,000 people took part in it,” he informed.

The geography of the participants is diverse. “All regions of Belarus, as well as China, Canada, the USA, Poland, Lithuania. Let's hope that the geography will keep expanding. Young people are many among the participants. Entire classes of schoolchildren take part. Students also participate,” the director of the institute said.
