GOMEL, 11 August (BelTA) - Polesie is a real goldmine for tourism, Mikhail Rusy, Chairman of the Standing Committee for Legislation and State Administration of the Council of the Republic, told the media during a visit to Petrikov District, BelTA has learned.
Mikhail Rusy believes tourism is one of the drivers of regional growth. “At the 7th Belarusian People’s Congress, the head of state set the government a clear task: to double the share of tourism in GDP. And this is realistic,” he said.
“People are interested in water tourism (for example, rafting trips on the ‘Herodotus Sea’ [a unique tour through the flooded areas of the Pripyat River]), which have proven very popular, as well as swamp tourism. Many are ready to put on boots and explore unique areas, see how waders nest and how black grouse perform their mating displays. Weekend tours are also in demand. We need to make use of all these resources. Belarus as a whole, and Polesie in particular, is a real goldmine in this regard,” Mikhail Rusy said.
He also noted that people do not always know that they can visit a safari park and see wild animals in their natural habitat at Pripyatsky National Park, or visit the residence of Polesie Zyuzya in Lyaskovichi.
“We can see that there is demand for cruises around Polesie by boat. Some people are interested in coming to fish on the Pripyat or go hunting. All of this is very important. Sometimes what is lacking is information. All these areas need to be developed,” he stressed.
