MOSCOW, 2 July (BelTA) – A wreath-laying ceremony to mark Belarus’ Independence Day and the 82nd anniversary of the country’s liberation from the Nazi invaders took place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow, BelTA has learned.
The wreath at the Eternal Flame was laid by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Russia Yuri Seliverstov. The official ceremony was attended by State Secretary of the Union State Sergei Glazyev, CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev, Member of the Board (Minister) of the Eurasian Economic Commission Aleksandr Subbotin, First Deputy Speaker of the Russian State Duma Ivan Melnikov, representatives of integration structures, Belarusian diplomats, and Russian officials.

Participants of the ceremony also laid flowers at the memorial signs Hero City Minsk and Brest Fortress Hero, installed on the Alley of Hero Cities in Alexander Garden. The ceremony concluded with a ceremonial march of the honor guard company accompanied by a military band.
Speaking with journalists, Ambassador Yuri Seliverstov emphasized that in Belarus, Independence Day is tied to the day of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders. “If it were not for that event in the past, we would not have independence today. Marking it and paying tribute to the fallen is very important, because everything we have today is the merit of the people who fought for our independence in that difficult time,” he stressed.
The diplomat called the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow a symbolic place that embodies the tribute to all who fought and defeated fascism.
