Monument to Francysk Skaryna in Chisinau to be installed in November

MINSK, 24 July (BelTA) – A monument to Francysk Skaryna in Chisinau will be installed in November this year, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Culture Ministry.

According to the ministry, nine applications were submitted for the contest for the design of the monument in the Moldovan capital, which was conducted by the Culture Ministry. A professional panel consisting of representatives of the Culture Ministry, National Center for Contemporary Arts, the National Library of Belarus, the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War, the Akhremchik college of art, the Belarusian Union of Artists named the work by sculptor Gennady Loiko the winner of the contest.

The national art expert council for monumental and monumental-decorative art endorsed the model of the bust made in soft material. The sculptor is already working on a life-size model. The one-meter high sculpture will be installed on a pedestal which will be manufactured in Chisinau. The total height of the monument will be a little over 2.5 meters.

As it was reported, the Moldovan government adopted the relevant decision at a meeting on 4 July on the initiative of the Moldovan Ministry of Culture with a view to perpetuating the memory of the famous Belarusian printer and on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the first book in the Belarusian language celebrated this year.

In accordance with the decision of the Moldova government and Chisinau City Hall, the monument to Francysk Skaryna will be installed in the center of the Moldavian capital - in the park at the intersection of streets of Alexei Mateevici and Metropolitan Gavril Banulescu-Bodoni, in front of the Belarusian Embassy in Moldova.

Expenditures on the project documentation for the monument, the execution of works, installation and landscaping will be covered by Belarus and sponsorship.
