Mirnyi progresses to Australian Open third round

MINSK, 22 January (BelTA) – 14th seeds Max Mirnyi and his new partner Treat Huey of the Philippines reached the third round of the Australian Open 2016 defeating Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci and Marcelo Demoliner 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, BelTA informs.

Roger Federer reached the last 16 at the Australian Open after proving too strong for Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the men’s singles. It brought the four-time champion his 300th Grand Slam match win. Only Martina Navratilova keeps more, 306 wins.

Belarus number one Victoria Azarenka, currently ranked 16th in the WTA rankings, also advanced into the women’s singles round three where she will face Japan’s Naomi Osaka (World No.127) on 23 January. In the opener Victoria Azarenka secured the double bagel against World No.43 Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium 6-0, 6-0. In round two she took a solid win over World No.54 Danka Kovinic of Montenegro 6-1, 6-2. Victoria Azarenka is a two-time winner of the Australian Open (2012, 2013).

The $32 million Australian Open 2016 will finish on 31 January.
