Minsk’s Independence Avenue seen as potential UNESCO Heritage List candidate post 2020

MINSK, 6 March (BelTA) – In 2019 the National Commission on UNESCO will be working to get the Belarusian landmarks included into the UNESCO lists of world heritage and intangible heritage in the nominations “Forest Beekeeping” and “Socialist Postwar Architecture in Central and Eastern Europe”. The commission convened for a meeting led by its chairman, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei in Minsk on 6 March, BelTA learned from the press service of the ministry.

There are plans to have Minsk’s Independence Avenue (Prospekt Nezavisimosti) nominated for the Socialist Postwar Architecture in Central and Eastern Europe. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in order to have the landmark included into the UNESCO World Heritage List, it should first of all get to the national list and be there at least for a year. The corresponding resolution has not been adopted yet. The issue is under discussion.

The meeting participants reviewed reports on the activities of five thematic committees: on culture, education, science and education in natural history, information, youth affairs and UNESCO clubs. Vladimir Makei stressed that today this UN organization is Belarus’ important partner in addressing social and cultural issues and a unique platform to promote national achievements in culture, science, education, and IT.

The minister summed up the results of last year. Budslau Fest was added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Vitebsk joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities. Belovezhskaya Pushcha hosted the monitoring mission of the UNESCO World Heritage Center and International Union for Conservation of Nature. UNESCO endorsed five Belarusian projects in culture, science, and sustainable development.

This year Belarus will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth Stanislaw Moniuszko (on the UNESCO list of memorable dates) and 30th anniversary of the Belarusian Association of UNESCO clubs. The country will also host seminars to mark Belarus’ accession to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, to discuss healthy lifestyles, education for sustainable development. The events calendar also features other themed activities on education, science, culture and information.

Members of the commission also discussed the preparation for the events to commemorate the 65th anniversary of Belarus' membership in UNESCO this year. They will include roundtables, exhibitions, scientific discussions, contests for young people. An open official meeting in May will bring together representatives of UNESCO and UNESCO national commissions of neighboring countries, other distinguished guests.
