Minsk to host Sambo World Cup

MINSK, 10 February (BelTA) – The Minsk Palace of Sports (4 Pobeditelei Avenue) will play host to the Sambo World Cup stage for the prizes of the President of Belarus on 12-13 February, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Sport and Tourism Ministry.

Partaking in the tournament will be the best sambo wrestlers from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Georgia, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Moldova, Poland, Russia, Romania, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The competitions will be held in nine weight categories among men and nine weight categories among women as well as in four weight categories in combat sambo (under 68, 74, 82, 90kg).

Head coach Vyacheslav Kot has named the following athletes as part of the Belarusian national team:

men: Andrei Kurlypo, Dzhambulat Akhmadov, Vladislav Burd (all – under 57kg), Ivan Aniskevich (62kg), Vadim Mikulsky (68kg), Alexei Stepankov (82kg), Andrei Kazusenok (90kg), Vasily Kuznetsov, Yevgeny Semochkin (both – 100kg), Yuri Rybak (over 100kg).

women: Leila Abbasova (48kg), Marina Zharskaya (52kg), Ksenia Danilovich (56kg), Yekaterina Prokopenko (60kg), Tatiana Matsko (64kg), Olga Namazova (68kg), Svetlana Timoshenko (80kg), Yelizaveta Moiseyenko (over 80kg).

Two Belarusians will perform in the combat sambo part of the tournament: Ilya Khodkevich (68kg) and Sergei Filomenko (82kg). All the athletes have taken part in international competitions. They are winners and prize-holders at the world and European championships, medalists of the World Cup and other prestigious tournaments.

The qualifying bouts will start at 10am on 12 and 13 February. The first finals will start at 5.30pm on 12 February after the opening ceremony. The second finals will start at 3pm on 13 February. The entry is free.

The tournament is organized by the Sport and Tourism Ministry, the Presidential Sport Club, the National Olympic Committee, the Minsk City Hall, the Belarusian Sambo Federation. The general information partner is the Belarusian TV and Radio Company.
