Minsk to host FAI World Helicopter Championship 2018

MINSK, 27 March (BelTA) – The 2018 FAI World Helicopter Championship will take place in Minsk from 23 to 29 July, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Federation of Air Sports.

The competition will be held at the Borovaya airfield near the Belarusian capital to bring together over 40 crews from 15 countries.

Belarusian aviators, who clinched silver last year in Poland, will be among the 2018 hopefuls. Helicopter pilot are to compete in slalom, cargo unloading, navigation and precision events, relays, and other disciplines.

The international air sports festival #Pronebo will be held in Minsk on 28-29 July. The festival will feature different aircraft, from aerostats to airplanes. The highlight of the event will be a helipopter race.

Belarus bid to host the World Helicopter Championship in the spring 2018. Jacques Berlo, president of the Rotorcraft Commission of the World Air Sports Federation (CIG FAI) visited competitions at Borovaya to explore the opportunities for holding the event in Minsk.

According to the Belarusian Federation of Air Sports, this is not the first time Belarus will host the World Helicopter Championship. In 1978, the competition took place at a Vitebsk-based aero club of the DOSAAF (Volunteer Society of Assistance for Army, Aircraft and Fleet).
