Minsk seeks to host Junior World Weightlifting Championship in 2021

MINSK, 19 February (BelTA) - Minsk wold like to host the Junior World Weightlifting Championship in 2021, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Weightlifting Union.

The possibility of hosting the tournament was discussed during a meeting between Chairman of the Belarusian State Customs Committee, head of the Supervisory Board of the Belarusian Weightlifting Union Yuri Senko and Secretary General of the International Weightlifting Federation Mohamed Hassan Jaloud. The meeting was attended by Chairman of the Belarusian Weightlifting Union Mikhail Rabikovsky, representatives of the Sport and Tourism Ministry and the National Olympic Committee of Belarus. The meeting focused on the prospects for organizing the Junior World Weightlifting Championships in Minsk in 2021 and cooperation in the matters of development of weightlifting sport in the world and in Belarus.

The participants of the meeting discussed the organization and conduct of the international weightlifting tournament in tribute to two-time Olympic champion Alexander Kurlovich in Grodno in October. The parties also examined a possibility of giving this tournament the status “Licensed qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games 2020 in Tokyo”.

Minsk played host to the European Weightlifting Championships in 2010.
