Minsk joins European Mobility Week

MINSK, 31 July (BelTA) – Minsk Vice Mayor Aleksandr Dorokhovich has signed a charter on Minsk’s joining the European Mobility Week for the fourth time. An action plan has also been approved for the Car Free Day in the Belarusian capital, BelTA learned from the Minsk Natural Resources and Environment Committee.

The European Mobility Week will feature information events with the participation of mass media. The concentration of pollutant substances in air as well as noise levels will be measured on 21-22 September. Educational institutions will run a variety of informative events. There are plans to lower curbstone, install cycling garages and parking sites.

On 22 September, following the decision of the Minsk Council of Deputies, motorists will be granted the right to use surface public transport and metro free of charge upon the presence of the driver’s license or the vehicle registration document.

The European Mobility Week will wrap up on 22 September with the urban environmental event Car Free Day. The event will be held in Oktyabrskaya Street and will feature entertainment for kids and adults, concerts and theatrical performances. Visitors will be able to test drive alternative transport, visit presentations and workshops from environmental public associations, and join a bike ride in the evening.

The European Mobility Week is an annual campaign which runs from 16 to 22 September to present sustainable mobility alternatives to citizens towards creating a more sustainable transport strategy for Europe. The organizer of the event is The European Mobility Week Campaign which unites local authorities and business from more than 2,000 cities of 45 countries.
