Makei presents Francysk Skaryna medal to director of Riga Belarusian schoolMINSK, 28 December (BelTA) – Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei presented the Francysk Skaryna medal to Anna Ivane, the Director of the Riga Belarusian school named after Yanka Kupala, and a honorary diploma of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Diana Stakhovich, the director of the Vilnius Belarusian gymnasium named after Francysk Skaryna, BelTA has learned.

When talking to the students and teachers of these educational institutions, Vladimir Makei stressed that the ministry is always ready to help them. “We have a program designed to support the Belarusians who live abroad. Unfortunately, the economic situation does not allow us to allocate large sums of money to fund various activities under this program. But I am sure that the situation will improve and we will pay more attention to our people who live abroad,” Vladimir Makei said.

Vladimir Makei told the guys about the country, its traditions and accomplishments. The students asked the minister his opinion about the promising occupations, what the Belarusians are proud most of all and whether it is hard to be a high-ranking diplomat.

At the end of the meeting the Minister of Foreign Affairs presented the panels depicting the fragments of Slutsk belts to the school and to the gymnasium. In turn, the children and teachers gave Christmas handmade souvenirs to Vladimir Makei.

As it was reported, Anna Ivane, the Director of the Riga Belarusian school named after Yanka Kupala, has been awarded the Francysk Skaryna Medal in recognition of her significant contribution to the promotion and development of education in the Belarusian language, the preservation of the cultural heritage of the Belarusians in Latvia. Anna Ivane was at the origins of the school, the only educational institution in Latvia teaching the Belarusian language and literature. The children's ensemble Vaverachka, numerous artistic hobby groups have been set up at the school with her direct participation. Today the school actually works as the Belarusian cultural and educational center.
