Kupala Night chooses festival symbol

MOGILEV, 3 June (BelTA) – Bereginya, a protective female spirit from Slavic mythology, has been chosen as the symbol of the national Kupala Night Festival (Alexandria Gathers Friends), said Aleksandr Zhigun, Head of the Culture Department of the Mogilev Oblast Executive Committee, BelTA has learned.

The festival program will begin with the opening of the traditional folk arts and crafts fair, one of the most popular and colorful attractions of the event.

“This year, the fair will be held under the motto ‘Under the Protection of the Kupala Bereginya’,” Aleksandr Zhigun said.

The Kupala Bereginya is a mythological Slavic spirit symbolizing femininity, protection and the magical powers of nature during Kupala Night. She is associated with water, herbs and the safeguarding of people from evil spirits. Bereginya is often associated with Dana, the goddess of waters in Slavic mythology, revered as a benevolent deity who gives life to all living things, embodies the unity of the elements of water and fire – central symbols of the Kupala tradition.

Each district of Mogilev Oblast will create its own Bereginya costume. The costumes will compete in a themed contest organized by cultural institutions.

Participants will design costumes and matching accessories, with the use of modern decorative materials permitted.

The jury will evaluate the costumes based on visual appeal, interpretation of the theme, originality of concept and execution, craftsmanship, durability, and suitability for various weather conditions and extended wear. Based on the results of the competition, first, second and third places will be awarded to the winners, the other participants will receive certificates.

The national Kupala Night Festival (Alexandria Gathers Friends) will take place in Shklov District on 11 July. The festivities will begin at 11:00.
