Immortal Regiment participants to gather in Brest Fortress 9 May

BREST, 4 May (BelTA) – Over 5,000 participants of the Immortal Regiment march will gather at the memorial complex Brest Hero Fortress on Victory Day, 9 May, BelTA learnt from First Secretary of the Brest Oblast Committee of the BRSM Youth Union Viktor Ivanov, BelTA has learned.

Brest is the first Belarusian city to join the interregional historical and patriotic public campaign Immortal Regiment. In 2014 the initiative was supported by nearly 500 residents of the oblast center. Partaking in this year’s march will be over 5,000 people. Bearing photos of their relatives-heroes the participants of the event will join veterans of the Great Patriotic War in marching through the streets of Brest to the Ceremonials Square in Brest Fortress. Apart from residents of Brest Oblast the memorial complex will also welcome guests from the CIS and non-CIS countries whose relatives took part in the Great Patriotic War.

According to Viktor Ivanov, this year the Immortal Regiment marches will be also held in Ivatsevichi, Bereza, Kobrin, Pinsk and Gantsevichi. “This initiative brings people together and helps keep the memory of the defenders. For young people this is an opportunity to learn more about the fate of their relatives who have passed away. The war has left a footprint on every Belarusian family. Therefore Great Victory is important for us all,” he noted.

The interregional historical and patriotic public movement The Immortal Regiment emerged in Tomsk in 2012. Local residents walk through the streets of their cities and towns holding portraits of relatives who fought in the Great Patriotic War.

Viktor Ivanov noted that young people will wish Happy Victory Day to all veterans of Brest Oblast and visit them with gifts.
